Server Installation Process

The server installation processis indeed very critical for people who may want to use DNS (Domain name System). You should go into it step by step, to make sure that your installation of the server won’t have any errors. This will prevent you from doing the process over and over again, so it cuts your time and effort.

The use of Domain Name System has so many benefits, particularly on allowing your client from the internet to get access to your server. Instead of typing the IP address which may be crowded with numbers and letters that are so hard to memorize, you can use Domain Name which is easy to recall and that is related to your niche.

One of the popular DNS is the BIND which stands for “Berkeley Internet Name Domain”. They offer wide array of packages to choose from which are intended for your specific needs. So before undergoing the server installation, you have to decide which packages you need to download, and always remember to choose based on your preference.

  1. Domain Name RegistrationBefore anything else, you need to first register your domain name to any services on the web, specializing on this field. In choosing your domain name, make sure that it will easily catch attention. It must not include of course numbers and other confusing words.

  2. Installing – After installation, you will now be able to edit and make some changes (like naming and configuring). You need to have 2 DNS, in which one is named as the master server. This is very important, so you need to take note of this.

  • Master serverSetting for the master server can be a bit complicated. For example, if you have the “domainname.com”, you need to replace the “domainname” with your registered domain name. You must enter and save in the directory the one that has the file extension of .db. There will be set of information that you need to enter along with it.

  • Secondary or Slave DNS serverSetting this up is much easier since you only have to enter a few set of data/information. You will only make some changes on the etc./name.conf and you’re done with it.

  1. Get the Configuration FileIf you’re done with the process being explained above, you can now get the configuration file which is “name-xfer” (example for BIND).

After this server installation process, the BIND will immediately start. However, if it didn’t, you may manually input commands, and then wait for about 48 hours.
